Surgery clinics

We offer a range of clinics and services at the surgery. There are some tasks you can do, such as health reviews, using our online forms.

Adults’ clinics

If you require routine immunisations, please make an appointment to see the practice nurse.

Antenatal care

We have an attached midwife, who will see you throughout your pregnancy.

She will assess the progress and health of you and your baby at regular intervals and arrange further monitoring and assessment if necessary.

The midwife will also liaise with your GP and the hospital if you require any medical treatment to ensure the safe delivery of your baby.

Cervical smears

Cervical smears are performed by our practice nurses.

All female patients between the ages of 24 and 64 years of age are encouraged to have this test performed.

For women aged 24.5 years to 49, a cervical smear is reccommended once every years.

For women aged 50 to 64, a cervical smear is recommended once every 5 years.

Cervical smears may be more regular if abnormalities are discovered and the hospital screening department place you on a different screening timetable.

Child development clinics

All children of pre-school age should be examined and have their development assessed by the health visitor or doctor.

The children will also be given their immunisations by the practice nurse.

Child health surveillance checks

The GPs and practice nurses work with our health visitor to ensure your child is developing well.

You will be invited to bring your child to either the health visitor or GP clinic for weighing and examination, to check your child is doing everything that might be expected for their age.

Children’s’ clinics

The practice policy is to ensure that all children should be fully immunised to protect against:

When the emergency clinics are full, we can provide up to two extra appointments per surgery with the other doctors on duty that day.

In the event you are told all other appointments are full and you feel you have a need to be seen that day, please ask to be booked into the emergency clinic or for a phone triage appointment.

Family planning

Our family planning service includes prescriptions for the contraceptive pill, and the fitting of coils and caps.

Once you are safely established on a contraceptive pill you may see one of the practice nurses for your regular checks.

If you have any problems on this treatment, the practice nurse will refer you back to the doctor.

Immunisation programme

Our practice nurses are trained to provide the full range of recommended immunisations for your child.

A GP is available if you have any concerns about your child’s progress or whether they are well enough to have the jabs.

If you have any concerns about any of immunisations being offered, we can discuss these with you beforehand and provide information for you to take away with you.

If you are planning to become pregnant, our GPs can advise you on what lifestyle measures to take, such as diet, exercise, and reducing smoking.

Please make a routine appointment and we can carry out a health check for you, advise on vitamin supplements you may require and arrange any blood tests for you.

Teenagers help and advice service

The change from childhood to an adult can be difficult. The time when a teenager most needs support such as counselling, lifestyle or sexual health can often be the most difficult to face coming to the doctor.

We are happy to try and help. As well as surgery appointments, there are a range of services available for you in Derby and we will be able to provide you with details or arrange appointments for you.

Travel vaccines

Travel vaccines required closer to the date of travel will need to be arranged with a private travel clinic.

Private Clinics:

Same Day: City Doc, 2a Main Street, Woodhouse Eaves, Loughborough, Leicestershire, LE12 8RZ phone number: 02031 310 965

Boots, 1 Devonshire Walk, Derby, DE1 2AH phone number: 02031 310 965

Some travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge. This is because not all travel vaccinations are included in the services provided by the NHS.

Flu vaccinations

Every year from September to January the surgery runs flu vaccination clinics. Those patients over the age of 65 and also patients under 65 in certain health risk groups will receive notification from the surgery advising them of the dates of the clinics. Patients should then follow the advice in the letter about booking an appointment.

Patients who are housebound will be visited by a nurse and vaccinated in their home.

Physiotherapy

Weekly clinics are held on a Tuesday at our St Marks Road Practice.

Referral is by the doctor only.

District nurses

A district nursing sister is a general nurse with an additional qualification in healthcare in the community. We have a team of five nurses who work closely with the practice and are based close to the medical centre at the Kingsmead Clinic. They can be contacted on 01332 564 900.

The team have a wide range of training and experience in general nursing care of the elderly, palliative care, wound care and infection control. They provide nursing care and support for patients in their own homes thus enabling the patient to remain at home where possible for the duration of their illness. A full holistic assessment of needs is made and referral onto other agencies made where appropriate.

They are available for help and advice on a range of problems such as incontinence, help with disability aids, bathing aids and advice on welfare benefits.

Care Coordinator

Our care coordinator is based in the practice and provides a vital link between all the different services and organisations in the community. They help patients get the support needed to remain independent and in their own homes for as long as possible.

Julie is available Monday, Tuesday and Friday morning.

For more information on the role of care coordinators, please read the care coordinator leaflet (PDF).

Counselling

We offer a councilling service at our St Marks Road Surgery on a Wednesday and Friday.

Free Hearing Clinic

We are currently offering a new service – a free hearing clinic. This clinic will be ran by The outside clinic. If you are a registered patient at our practice, experiencing difficulties with your hearing, and aged 55 or over then this clinic is for you.

The assessment

The assessment lasts approximately 15 minutes and the assessor will take the time to discuss any difficulties you are experiencing with your hearing. They will then check the health of your ears and look for any build-up of wax before performing the hearing assessment.

If you are interested in booking an appointment, please ask a receptionist.

Carers advice and support

As a practice we want to support our patients who are carers. Therefore, we now facilitate advice and support sessions for carers.

If you are a carer and are unsure about what support you may be entitled to, then please use this service. Tina from Derbyshire Carers joins us fortnightly on a Thursday, between 10am and midday.

If you are interested in speaking with Derbyshire carers, then you can either book an appointment time with Tina by speaking to one of our receptionists or just turn up on one of the drop-in days.

If you would like to register a carer with the practice, please complete our form.
